Poetry Month Gone Dark! Paulette Forshey's Crows

Crows by J.Paulette Forshey

They are here.
Lining, filling the bare branches of the winter’s trees.
Dark and noisy they caw to each other.
they call out to those that can hear.
they call out — to me.
Why?
They are the carriers of souls long since and yesterday past.
They bring these souls, these visitors to me.
Why?
At night when...I...should be safe in my slumber they come to me —
relatives, friends, passing acquaintances to sit and to chat over what has been.
Faces full of smiles, voices full of laughter,
they offer no threat only to chat.
Then, why do I feel so threatened?
Filled, am I with such hallow dreadfullness from their nightly visits.
By day the ebony birds come and go,
circling, circling, circling the house.
One leaves, one stays they are never gone,
calling, calling, watching, and calling.
Carriers of souls why are you here?
Do you forewarn?
Do you prepare?
Or are you here to only to past the time, to visit and to chat?

Paulette lives in a small Ohio town with her husband, a Princess Basset Hound and a Papillon who think they own her place. Her mornings belong to her writing, her days are spent loving their eight grandbabies, and her nights belong to the love of her life, her husband, the real inspiration for her heroes. She's a member of Romance Writers of America, Central Ohio Fiction Writers, Northeast Ohio Romance Writers, and the Fantasy, Futuristic & Paranormal Chapter of RWA.
